Mission Trip Update

First of all, this post is actually long overdue! I finally had time to update but blogger was down!

Wow Wow Wow!

We blew the top off of the thermometer! $3406.000! Wow! In just a hair over 3 months! I was $74.00 shy at 3 months and then suddenly a few people who jumped in to help! I told them I was at my goal and they wanted me to keep the funds and use towards other parts of my trip. Which is good - things keep coming up. But good things!

See, today I got an e-mail from our trip leader going over a few things for our trip! Our primary goal is still the medical part of the trip. School type of physicals for the kids. But we will also be checking out the parents as well with the intention of working with the parents and forming a community group of parents to explore their own problems and help them as a group come up with solutions. Remember, we want to give them a hand up not a hand out. If we can help them see what around them is causing problems then we are already working on a solution!!

We will have to do the personal self care lessons with the kids as well. What we can do to help them take care of themselves to prevent health problems!

This is something new - we will have the opportunity to walk in the community and do a prayer walk. Where we walk around the area and pray for the people and places we encounter.

We will also be doing home visits of the sick to work with them and pray for them.

This one is really neat! They have a new project there called "Bring the Light" - This is a new type of outreach where we will be split in groups and team up with Kenyans. 5 or 6 people per team. Each team will go into a house and actually put in a skylight. The houses there are mostly tin and stuff like that. The area we cut out will be replaced by translucent fiber glass to allow natural light in! Now remember, these houses have no windows. No electricity. Candles if they are lucky. Can you imagine the difference to get morning light in and evening light - and DAYLIGHT! Being a sunshine person myself, this is huge for me! I am so tickled to be a part of this. Now we won't be the ones up on the roofs, we will be talking with the people in the houses - about Jesus and the Light that He is!

The cost of this project is about $40.00 - and that will do 6 homes! WOW! Can you imagine that! See how far God can stretch $40.00!!! So as a member of the team we are all asked to pitch in $5.00 and a team of 6 can almost pay for the 6 houses we will do!!!! I'm so excited to be a part of this!!! I still want to get some candy to take with me for the kids and we still need to collect over the counter medications to take with us. So the money will be put to good use! I promise!

I had my Chick-fil-A fundraiser tonight.

This is how it works - I pass out flyers and anyone who came in tonight and turns in my flyer or mentions my trip when they order - I get 20% of the order! Basically I'm bringing in business and for doing that I get funds for my trip! So I mailed and handed out flyers and posted on FB and friends passed out flyers! What an amazing turn out! I was disappointed a few people didn't show, but it was obvious how much support I do have! People from Garfield, people from Indian Creek, old friends, new friends - I was so blessed! All they had to do was eat some yummy goodness at Chick-fil-A and I get funds for my trip! I had fun catching up with friends and sharing my trip. I tried to spend time at each table and thank everyone..what a blessing it was!! The funds I raised tonight are going to go to offset my shots tomorrow. Tomorrow I get what I am calling my "exotic" shots. Yellow Fever, Typhoid (pills I think) and my polio booster. He mentioned we'd talk about others - Meningitis and an MMR booster. I get my shots at 3 tomorrow. I'm hoping they don't make me sick like the HEP A&B does. I'll keep you posted!

I've got more to share that is on my heart - but I'm not ready to put it into words yet. Just the thoughts going through my head.

Till then, again I thank you yet again for encouraging me and support. We are just over 3 months...

In 3 months I'll be in an experience that I know I'll never forget. But that is another post one day....
